Building Futures Across the Nation

The Building Futures Across the Nation Scholarship competition was established to address the Credit Union’s desire to encourage continuing education while reaching out to the justice, and law enforcement communities.

This year, nearly 150 Members submitted applications that were reviewed by a Scholarship Selection Committee to distribute the approved funds. Four of the scholarships were awarded in the names of four Heroes within the justice and law enforcement community, and the balance of the awards were distributed at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee based on merit. Please join us in extending congratulations to the winners of the 2024 Scholarship Competition!

Honoring Our Heroes

Justice Federal is pleased to award Scholarships in honor of the following heroes:

David Dorn Scholarship

Retired Police Captain David Dorn, (November 24, 1942 - June 2, 2020) performed his duties with distinction and commitment over a 38-year career with the St. Louis Police Department. Captain Dorn acted as the Deputy Commander of the Bureau of Patrol Support, which oversaw nine agencies within the St. Louis Police Department. Tragically, he was mortally wounded during a night of violent protests in St. Louis. Captain Dorn was very dedicated to youth, especially disadvantaged youth and wanted to see them succeed. He strived to be a role model for young men and women to go into law enforcement and modeled the way.

Enrique S. "Kiki" Camarena Scholarship

Enrique S. “Kiki” Camarena (July 26, 1947 - February 9, 1985) selflessly served as an undercover Drug Enforcement Administration Agent who was abducted and killed while on assignment in Mexico. Each year, Mr. Camarena’s memory and sacrifice are honored during DEA’s Red Ribbon Week, the nation’s largest drug prevention awareness program.

John Patrick O’Neill Scholarship

John Patrick O’Neill (February 6, 1952 - September 11, 2001) served as Special Agent in Charge at the Federal Bureau of Investigation until his retirement in 2001, when he became Head of Security at the World Trade Center. Tragically, he was killed in the September 11th terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City while selflessly coordinating evacuation efforts.

John Howland Wood Jr. Scholarship

John Howland Wood Jr. (March 31, 1916 – May 29, 1979), was an American lawyer and judge from Texas. He served as a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas before assassinated in San Antonio, in 1979. Wood's killing was the first assassination of a federal judge in the 20th century.
